An Evening with David Bentley & Mark Spencer: Jazz from the Soul
Award-winning jazz pianist, songwriter and storyteller David Bentley teams up with tenor saxophone master Mark Spencer for an intimate and highly listenable night of smokin jazz, cool blues and sharp musical conversation. Together they serve up a rich bouillabaisse of sound drawing on sophisticated jazz, New Orleans street music, hip grooves and original compositions, with the occasional sideways glance at the world and everything in it.
David Bentley is best known internationally as the writer of In a Broken Dream, the still-smouldering R&B classic first recorded by Python Lee Jackson and later taken to No.3 on the British charts. The song has since appeared in major films and documentaries, and most recently resurfaced globally as Every Day, a hit remix by A$AP Rocky. On the night, Bentley offers a laid-back, jazz-inflected take on this iconic song alongside a wide range of original material.
While his songwriting has travelled the world, Bentleys first love has always been jazz. Over a long and eclectic career he has performed with touring jazz greats including Milt Jackson, Phil Woods and Mark Murphy, held long-running residencies in Brisbane, and fronted blues and jazz projects that became festival favourites. His recordings have been playlisted on ABC Radio National, and his critically acclaimed trio albums The Leopard Lodge Sessions and The Lake Sessions showcase his distinctive blend of groove, lyricism and harmonic depth.
Joining him is Mark Spencer, a tenor saxophonist renowned for his lyrical improvisation, fiery funk excursions and masterful technique. A former finalist in the Jazz Saxophone Awards, Spencer studied in New York with George Coleman and Chris Potter, and later taught at the Queensland Conservatorium. A long-time collaborator, he has been a core member of the David Bentley Trio Plus One for over a decade.
Bentley and Spencer create music that is relaxed yet adventurous, soulful yet swinging a night that moves easily from jazz standards to original compositions, always guided by deep musical rapport and a shared love of groove. For jazz lovers, this promises an engaging, warm and memorable session.
