Welcome to ESCO's Spring 2025 concert, celebrating one of the most iconic symphonies from one of the most icon and enigmatic characters in all of music history.
"Fate knocking at the door. Beethovens Fifth Symphony opens with the four most famous notes in all music. Revolutionary in its time, it is arguably the best-known piece of music in history.
This radical symphony evolved over a surprisingly long time. Beethoven began sketches for it -- initially without the famous opening bars -- in 1804, immediately after completing his revolutionary Third Symphony (Eroica); The fifth symphony was completed in 1808
Mozart died just a little more than two months after The Magic Flute opened, only 35 years old. Despite the tragedy of such an early deathand the incalculable loss to musicit is comforting to realize that Mozart enjoyed at least a taste of its immense success. The Overture to the Magic Flute will open this concert.
The Magic Flute can be enjoyed as an entertaining adventure story with immediately accessible music, but dig a bit deeper to discover an intricate labyrinth of symbols and hidden meanings with manifold references to the number three, a number with great significance in Freemasonry. The opening chords additionally suggest a process of knocking at the Temple of Wisdom.
