Beetlejuice at Revival House Perth
Say his name three times and prepare for Tim Burton's anarchic masterpiecea gleefully twisted comedy that launched Burton into the big leagues and remains one of the most inventive supernatural comedies ever made. This 1988 gem is Burton at his most playful, before big budgets smoothed out his delightfully rough edges.
When the recently deceased Maitlands (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) find their quaint Connecticut home invaded by insufferable New York yuppies, they hire "bio-exorcist" Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton in a career-best performance) to scare the living away. What follows is a manic explosion of practical effects, stop-motion animation, and Keaton's unhinged improvisations as the "ghost with the most."
Burton's imagination runs wild herefrom the waiting room in the afterlife filled with bizarre casualties to the iconic dinner party possession scene set to Harry Belafonte's "Day-O." The production design creates a fantastical underworld that feels both menacing and cartoonish, while Danny Elfman's carnival-esque score became the template for their legendary collaborations.
Winona Ryder's Lydia Deetz, the goth teenager who becomes the Maitlands' unlikely ally, captured the hearts of every misfit kid who felt like a stranger in the normal world. Catherine O'Hara and Jeffrey Jones round out a perfect ensemble as Lydia's pretentious artist parents.
This is the film that proved Burton was a visionary, not a flukea perfect blend of macabre humor, heart, and pure imagination that influenced decades of filmmakers.
