Ted Demme's 2001 rise-and-fall epic chronicles the true story of George Jung, the man who became the largest importer of cocaine in American history during the 1970s and 80sand lost everything in the process. This is Goodfellas for the drug trade, a tragic portrait of the American Dream twisted into a nightmare of excess and betrayal.

Johnny Depp delivers one of his most grounded and heartbreaking performances as Jung, a working-class Massachusetts kid who just wants to give his family the life his struggling father (Ray Liotta, perfectly cast against type) could never provide. Starting with marijuana in California's 1960s counterculture, George rides the wave of America's appetite for drugs all the way to Colombia, partnering with Pablo Escobar's Medellin Cartel and importing tons of cocaine into the United States.

Penelope Cruz electrifies as Mirtha, George's volatile wife whose addiction mirrors the film's descent from sun-soaked glamour into paranoid darkness. The supporting castincluding Paul Reubens as George's business partner Derek Foreal and Franka Potente as his first love Barbaracreates a gallery of dreamers and schemers all chasing the same poisoned promise.

Demme refuses to glamorize the lifestyle for long. What starts as freedom and adventure curdles into betrayal, prison sentences, and a devastating final scene that ranks among cinema's most quietly devastating moments. The film asks: what's the point of having everything if you lose everyone?
