Dub Side Down - Reggae Dub and Bass Music from Back in the Day to Tomorrow

After the success of last months Dub Side Down at Sooki Lounge, we are pleased to announce the next instalment of Reggae, Dub and Bass Music, at Sooki, will be on Friday the 12^th December from 9pm to 3am. The Sooki Lounge features a large relaxed outdoor smoking area with comfortable heating and seating, has a wide range of local and craft beers on tap, as well as non alcoholic beverages and is just two minutes walk from Belgrave station, where trains run direct to and from the city all night. 

The foundation of the night is based on Jamaican Roots Reggae from the 1970s to the 2020s merging with UK Dub and Bass Music to take us on a journey showcasing multiple musical styles, that cater to the tastes of the discerning Bass heads that love Reggae and Dub. Following some feedback, well be playing a bit less Dubstep, and a bit more Roots and Dub, especially towards the later hours of the night, as that seems to be what most people wanted.

Heading this months DJ line-up is LEGO, who will be playing a strictly vinyl Roots Reggae set. Lego gained his reputation as a roots selector on the System Unknown Soundsystem, Melbournes first soundsystem, run by Melburnians, but is more recently known for mashing up the dancefloor with his Drum n Bass sets, playing all over Melbourne. Lego will be playing on the Roots soundsystem, Heartical Hi-Powa, at this years Jamaican Music and Food Festival held annually at Seaworks, in Williamstown. 

DJ Bakkamoona is a familiar face in the hills music scene, and earning himself a growing wider reputation, for his excellent selection, and seamless DJ mixing. Another vinyl obsessed DJ, with an extensive collection, spanning a wide range of electronic styles, from Roots, Dub and Bass to add the mix. Bakkamoona, along with Ital Magnus, is one of the regular DJs at the local Dubfest parties, held at the Fat Goat in Upwey for the last several years.

Alongside Lego, and Bakkamoona, is Dj-Ital Magnus, originally hailing from London, UK, but who now calls Melbourne home, having brought his extensive record collection with him. Magnus began Djing reggae and electronic music at house and warehouse parties as well as festivals, including Glastonbury, in the 90s and was resident DJ at Escape from Samsara, in London. Since relocating to Australia, Magnus gained his reputation as a Dub selector, playing on Melbournes first heavyweight Reggae soundsystem, Heartical Hi-Powa in the 2010s, then hosting the PBS FM radio show, Break the Chain, forerunner to Riddim Yard. Having been a long time lover and collector of Jamaican Roots Reggae since the 80s Magnus draws from one of the deepest collections of Reggae vinyl in Australia and then takes it to the next level with a killa selection of Bass styles including UK Rave, Jungle, Breakbeat, DnB, and Dubstep, with the occasional self produced electronic Dub tune finding its way into the mix.

Come join us on the journey, Friday 12/12. All the DJs will be spinning pure vinyl, with the possible exception of a few digital dubplates that may get thrown into the mix!
