In late 2024, I found myself at the end of a life chapter after a long and deeply committed marriage. The separation was a profound emotional event not marked by anger or dramatic rupture, but by a quiet, painful shift in identity, as someone whose entire adult life had been shared in partnership as a wife, mother, collaborator the sudden stillness left behind was confronting and strange.
Alone but All One is my attempt to sit with that stillness. To honour it, explore it, and ultimately transform it. The project comes from a place of vulnerability and deep artistic clarity. It is not about naming or shaming it is not a reckoning or a public unravelling. It is about what happens quietly, after the noise. About the moments where we ask ourselves: Who am I now? And how do I live from here?
This body of work is designed not to offload, but to offer. Throughout my career, Ive noticed that some of the most meaningful audience moments have come when people feel what Ive put into song something theyve lived but havent spoken aloud. That sense of shared experience is incredibly powerful.
Serendipitously earlier this year, my friend author/journalist Trent Dalton offered me 156 pages of unpublished lyrics for me to dream with. This has resulted in a new song cycle called Just for Dreaming for my AVE Australian Vocal Ensemble featuring 12 Australian classical composers, but I felt myself inexorably drawn to some of his lyrics that were about the joy and wonder of new love, and Trents words gave me great succour in my darkest lonely hours.
So in this spirit of shared experience, half the album I wrote solo and the other half I wrote with dear Trents words so it honours the birth of love, and the reimagined love after divorce. This album is for anyone whos gone through a life shift not just separation, but grief, uncertainty, or quiet reinvention. Its music for sitting with things. For remembering were not alone, even in solitude.
Its personal, but I hope it will resonate in a way that becomes collective. Alone but All One is a quiet turning inward a return to something essential. Musically it is very stepped back just me, my piano and a string quartet, recorded live in my lounge room on Gubbi Gubbi Country in the hills behind Nambour, Queensland. It feels like a deep breath before the next chapter. The creative intention is clear: to honour this moment, share it with care, and trust that others will feel themselves in it too.
