Seven Nights of DAVID LYNCH
Wild at Heart
Buckle up for David Lynch's wild ride through the twisted highways of American violence and passion. This 1990 road movie explodes with the manic energy of Elvis Presley, the brutal poetry of pulp fiction, and Lynch's signature brand of surreal Americana gone horribly wrong.
Nicolas Cage delivers one of his most unhinged performances as Sailor Ripley, a rockabilly ex-con whose snakeskin jacket represents his "individual freedom and belief in personal liberty." When he's released from prison, he hits the road with his volatile girlfriend Lula (Laura Dern in a fearless, Oscar-nominated turn) to escape her psychotic mother Marietta (Diane Ladd) and her criminal associates. What follows is a fever dream journey through the American South, populated by grotesque villains, bizarre encounters, and enough violence to make Tarantino blush.
Lynch adapts Barry Gifford's novel with trademark intensity, creating a love story wrapped in Grand Guignol horror. The film won the Palme d'Or at Cannes (amid considerable controversy), and it's easy to see whythis is Lynch at his most provocative, blending 1950s Americana with nightmarish violence in ways that are simultaneously repulsive and hypnotic. Willem Dafoe's terrifying Bobby Peru and Harry Dean Stanton's haunting investigator add unforgettable supporting turns to this carnival of American grotesques.
With its Elvis obsession, graphic violence, and hallucinatory detours, Wild at Heart is Lynch's most divisive filmyou'll either be swept up in its manic energy or thoroughly disturbed by its brutal excesses. Either way, you won't forget it.
